Most of us have been to an auto body shop at least once. And usually, it's not because something went right.
Maybe it was a fender bender. A parking lot surprise. Someone backing into your car while you were running errands. You hand over your keys, hope everything goes smoothly, and a few days later your car comes back looking like nothing ever happened.
But have you ever wondered what actually happens in between? Or who the people are behind the business?
That's exactly what I wanted to find out.
So I spent a morning at J&J Autobody on Piner Road in Santa Rosa with owner Kelly. I walked in expecting to learn how an auto body shop works. I walked out with a story I never would have guessed from the outside, and a new appreciation for one of Sonoma County's most caring local businesses.
The Story Behind J&J Autobody
Plenty of people in Santa Rosa know J&J Autobody. Many have been customers themselves, or they came in because a friend or neighbor sent them. But very few know how the shop got its start.
J&J Autobody was founded around 2018 by John and Jen Wilson, close friends of Kelly's. John has always been a car hobbyist, and Jen was the driving force who turned that passion into a real business.
After Jen passed away in February 2022, John was left wondering what the future of the shop would look like, especially with several other businesses to manage. Then, over dinner downtown one evening, he asked Kelly a simple question: would she be his business partner?
She said yes.
Today, Kelly runs J&J Autobody. She describes her working relationship with John as something like a husband-and-wife partnership, two people who trust each other and share the same goal. It's a business built on friendship and resilience, and you can feel that the moment you walk in.
It Starts With the Person, Not the Car
I asked Kelly to walk me through what actually happens from the moment someone drops off their car until they pick it up looking brand new again.
Her answer surprised me. She didn't start with the car at all.
At J&J Autobody, the process always starts with the person walking through the door. Some customers arrive shaken up, having just been in an accident. Others come in calm and organized, with their insurance policy and claim number ready to go. Either way, Kelly and her team begin by understanding what that person needs.
Once that's clear, the shop takes the burden off the customer. If it's an insurance claim, J&J works directly with the insurance company through the entire process. The goal is to get the vehicle back to factory standards, and to make sure the customer doesn't have to carry the stress of managing the details themselves.
Along the way, there is clear communication at every step. And the care doesn't stop once the car leaves the lot. Kelly's team follows up with customers well after the repair is done.
As Kelly put it, the goal is simple: provide the best service they can to the community here in Sonoma County.
What Surprises People Most About J&J Autobody
I always ask business owners what people are most surprised by. Kelly had two answers.
The first? Kelly is a woman, and J&J Autobody is a female-owned business. In an industry where most people expect a guy behind the counter, that alone catches customers off guard.
The second is the compassion behind what the team does every day. Kelly and her staff make sure every customer feels taken care of and valued, with complete communication from start to finish.
It's a very people-first, family-style approach, and it's not something most of us expect when we're dropping off a dented bumper.
Nobody Comes to an Auto Body Shop on a Good Day
Let's be honest. Nobody walks into a body shop because they're having a great day.
Usually, people are stressed. They're dealing with insurance. They're worried about the cost. And sometimes they simply don't know what happens next.
So I asked Kelly how her team helps people through that experience.
Her answer: they listen first.
Whether it's a phone call, an email, or someone walking in the front door, the team adapts to each customer and how they prefer to communicate. From there, they follow the customer's lead on what they need, and then they reassure them with three simple words: "We've got you."
That's where the relief comes in. Customers leave knowing they're in good hands. And long after the repair, what they remember is not the paperwork. It's that they felt genuinely cared for, which is exactly why so many new customers come to J&J through referrals.
Hiring for Heart, Not Just Skill
One thing that's obvious walking around J&J Autobody is how strong the team is. So I asked Kelly what she looks for when she hires.
She looks for compassion first, along with a clear understanding of the work. But she also looks for people who are family-oriented, because that's how the shop operates.
The team spends eight to ten hours a day together, and Kelly sees them as a family. Skill level matters, of course. But for Kelly, it's just as much about what she can nurture in each person, and what that person can give back to the community.
That philosophy shows. It's part of why customers feel the difference the moment they walk in.
Proud to Help Santa Rosa Rebuild
Before we wrapped up, I asked Kelly what makes her proudest when she looks around the shop today.
Her answer went far beyond cars.
Santa Rosa has been through so much over the last several years. Our community watched neighborhoods crumble during the fires, and then watched them rebuild. For Kelly, being able to operate a business on Piner Road and help build back into this community is what she's proudest of.
That really stuck with me. J&J Autobody isn't just a place that repairs vehicles. It's a business built on showing up for people, whether that's the customers walking through the front door or the team working inside the shop every day. Those are the kinds of businesses that become part of the fabric of a community.
